Lynyrd Skynyrd at Atlanta Motor Speedway…

So, this past weekend was supposed to be the AdvoCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway. However, it rained for most of the evening on Sunday and the race was postponed until Tuesday (9-6). The rain didn’t come down until around 6:45, which allowed NASCAR to go through all the pre-race events including the Lynyrd Skynyrd show and the racer introductions.

I didn’t event think to ask or look-up who was playing the “concert” when I looked at the schedule last week. I was more concerned about shooting the race. However… I soon learned that Lynyrd Skynyrd was going to play. That peeked my interest, especially since I plan to start shooting more bands and musicians in the future.

So, there was are hanging out with Dale Jr. (throwing names around)
and I realized the show was starting. I walked over to the stage from the drivers meeting and quickly realized that it was going to be almost impossible to get to the front of the stage. I had all my gear with me including a 20lb backpack. I figured I better get up there or I wasn’t going to get any shots.

So, I started to muscle my way to the front. It’s truly amazing how people get out of your way when you have a bog lens on. It’s almost like they are thinking that they are in your way… which most of the time they are! ha

Anyways… A security guard sees me trying to get up to the front and she grabs my hand and pulls my to the front of the stage. I’m not sure if I would have gotten up there if it weren’t for her. As soon as I got up to the front… It started drizzling. It seemed to hold off a bit until the show was over. I had a great time shooting them.

Here are a few of my favorite Lynyrd Skynyrd pics form the day.

2011 UGA Picture Day

2011 UGA Picture Day

HEY FOLKS…. Yesterday, Aug 20th, was the annual UGA Picture Day in Athens, GA. This is an opportunity for the parents and other family members to come over to the practice facility and meet the all the players and their families. Oh yeah… We also take individual photos of the players as well as group and a large team photo. The team then gets on a bus and heads over to another facility to meet the fans! It’s a great day for everyone.

This marks the 5th year that I’ve had the privilege of shooting Picture Day along with my fellow Dawg shooter Gabby.

It’s always a good time shooting in Athens and I have to thank Claude Felton and the rest of the gang at the UGA Athletic Department for being so helpful and accommodating.

While it’s work :) we like to have a little fun as well. Here’s a pic of me while we were adjusting our settings.
I took a bit of a creative license while doing some post processing…
Me... no explanation for this immaturity. :)

Another cool thing about shooting the Dawgs is having the chance to meet the kids. I can call them kids because I’m old! haha
Aaron Murray and Orson Charles couldn’t have been nicer.

See ya next year!

Something really cool!

Okay… There’s one car at every show that I see that starts me thinking that I’ve seen it before and this car has done it twice. Here is a pic of the car from the Lane Museum.
FLU-100.jpg

It’s a white Fiat 500 that, I believe, was the first 500 delivered in the UK: Hence the steering wheel on the right. The guy that originally drove the car is named Jim MaGill. He is the gentleman featured in the video. Watch the video… It’s pretty cool! It looks like the car will be op permanent display at the Lane Museum.

Here’s a couple pictures that I took of it back in 2008 at the Italian Car Day in Duluth, GA!
I had a large print made of this image and auctioned it off at last years FREAKOUT in Asheville.
That’s where Jim MaGill let me know that “used” to be his car. I didn’t quite understand what he was telling me at the time, but now it is crystal clear!

Few of my favorite Fiat shots…

Here are few of my favorite shots from the past weekend in Nashville. I wish I could have taken more artistic shots, but the portraits in front of the Parthenon and shooting candid shots at dinners took up most of my time.

Anyways… I saw this in my head as soon as I walked up to the Fiat showcase outside the hotel. I loved the lighting of the tent/trailer.. the reds and yellow looked awesome. I pumped up the ISO, set my SB800 to 1/64 power and barely lit the car. I really like the way the car is silhouetted against the Fiat set-up in the background.

I loved this old Fiat at the Lane Museum in Nashville. The paint was bronze and it really stood out.

Any probably my favorite… I was walking through the parking lot and this image just hit me. So nostalgic… A classic car at a drive-in theatre.

2011 Fiat FreakOut in Nashville, Tennessee

I usually shoot a handful of auto shows every year with the FLU.org “2011 Fiat FreakOut” show being one of them.
These guys are really passionate about Fiats and Italian cars in general.

They asked me to shoot their member’s cars in from on the Parthenon at Centennial Park in Nashville, TN.

I shot the cars with with two AlienBee 800’s with a couple of umbrellas.  I was going to use soft boxes, but I didn’t have a lot of time to do set-up and break down due to the large number of cars that I was going to have to shoot.

You can see, in the first two images, how I have the lights positioned. It was about 10:00am CST, so I have plenty of light coming from the east. I really could have gotten away with using one light to light the side of the car, but I decided to go with two so I would have an even spread of light… and I brought the darn things with me, so I might as well use them! :)
ACE5-100.jpg

In this second image… you can see the Parthenon and the area in front of it that we had to work with. We had about 75 yards from where we were set up and the front right corner of the building. I had a few concerns when they first showed me where we would be shooting and what they wanted. But I knew we would be able to work through them.

I was shooting with my D700 and 24-70mm 2.8 lens, so getting the whole building in the picture wasn’t a big deal. However, I wouldn’t have been able to get this shot with the D7000 because of the cropped sensor. Gotta love the FX sensor! Another concern, I had was finding a flat area to shoot. We got really lucky as there was about a 12 foot area that seemed to flatten out towards the sidewalk where we were set up. You can kinda make this out in the second set-up picture if you look just in front of the lights.
ACE5-101.jpg

As you can see in one of the final images… the car is light up nicely and the background really pops. I started the lighting process by metering a well lit shot of the Parthenon.
The image was shot about an hour later… check out the shadows.

  • ISO 320
  • 24mm
  • 1/200 sec
  • F11

Once I had that reading, I was able to adjust the AlienBees by adjusting the power through the “Cyber Commander.” You can’t beat this set-up for the money. I shot the images in RAW so I would have full control over as much data in the image for post processing.
I only sharpened the image a bit and added some color saturation as well as a slight vignette in Lightroom 3.

Favorite Force photos from the 2011 season.

This past Saturday was the last home game for the Georgia Force. The Force fell to the Chicago Rush 51-41 in front of a sold out arena. It was the first sell-out all year. I sure wish they would have played like they have all year at home for this crowd. A few early turnovers really hurt the Force in the first half.

Anyways… It was a lot of fun shooting this guys all season. I’ve learned a lot about shooting an arena game and I got to hone my football shooting skills. Here are a few of my favorites from the season. You can click on any of the photos to open up the set in Flickr.

Crosby getting pumped up before the first game of the year. I was wondering if he was putting on a show or if he was for real. Well… the next pic (taken after this one) shows the goose bumps running down his arm. And after watching this guy play all year… I know it’s real. This dude brings it!

Maurice Purify is a good receiver that should get another shot at the NFL. The Force missed him badly last game. He signed a deal to play in Omaha this year in the UFL… so he didn’t play. He catches everything… or just about everything.
Here’s a pic of Purify after scoring a TD. He only did this flip once… I’m sure the coaches or his agent reminded him that doing this flip probably wasn’t in his best interest. Regardless… I got it. :)

Purify gets crushed in this pic but holds on to the ball.

CJ Johnson with a 37yd TD to close out the game.

Who doesn’t love a lil’ pre-game introduction?

Kickers don’t get a lot of love, but this is a cool pic. :)
Martinez is a solid kicker. I only remember seeing him miss one kick all year.

This is cool pic of my boys Ray and Sean. Those guys were solid in holding down that line all year.

I almost got steamrolled on this onside kick.

What would a football game be without cheerleaders?

That’s right… It’s football in June. Arena football!

I’ve been shooting the Georgia Force for most of this season and I’ve had a blast.  It’s one of the hardest games I’ve ever shot. The action is fast like hockey, the ball is constantly moving like basketball and you are pretty much relegated to 2 to 4 spots in the arena, just because there really isn’t any bench to run around or behind to get to the other side of the stadium.

In the end…I’ve learned a lot over the past 3 months.  Let the play to come to you.  Enjoy the time shooting.  Work on camera adjustments with indoor lighting and have fun with it.

Here are a few shots from the last game.

Thanks,

John

1.

This was taken during an onside kick. One of the players swatted the ball and it bounced right over my head. I was buried in the camera shooting and started to think… “Time to pull out!” haha

2.
Maurice Purify (Nebraska: His 16 career touchdowns also placed him second on the Nebraska career charts) takes a huge hit but makes the catch.

3.
Like I mentioned earlier… The guys like to have a little fun too.

4.
Little Pick-6 for a TD!
